Responsive Design for Library Websites

The world has truly gone mobile, with more people now accessing the internet on phones or tablets than on desktops or laptops, especially younger people.

But what does this mean for your library’s website?

Put simply, it means that in order to provide the best user experience possible for your patrons, your online portal must adapt to this changing landscape. (And now it can!)

Responsive design allows for web pages to scale according to what device the site is being viewed on.

Viewing a non-responsive site on a smartphone is something we’ve all experienced. The slow load times, missing content and having to constantly zoom in and out to read text, view images and navigate. It can be very frustrating.

But is it really that much of a problem?

Well…

Here are 5 key statistics to show why going responsive is crucial in 2016:

1. Between December 2013 and December 2015, tablet internet consumption grew by 30%. (comScore)

2. In the same period, smartphone internet also consumption grew by 78%. (comScore)

3. In fact, mobile devices now account for nearly 2 of every 3 minutes spent online. (comScore)

4. What’s more, 38% of people will stop engaging with a website if the content/layout is unattractive. (Adobe)

5. 80% of council websites are now responsive, according to the Better Connected survey. (Socitm) However this rarely extends into online library services.

It doesn’t have to be this way!

Technology has a tendency of catching up with those lagging behind and this is just as true for websites. These figures show that the world really is going mobile and that those being left behind really can pay the cost, with users piling out of outdated sites at every exit.

This is something we’ve been working on. And we can now announce that:

Our design team at Axiell can now help you upgrade to a responsive design, to help you exploit these opportunities.  So no matter what device Arena is viewed on, be it smartphone, tablet or PC, your content is displayed as clearly as possible and people have no reason to leave the library’s website.
